| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description The fiction section from Laurence Perrine's all-time bestselling introduction to literature, this concise, authoritative text provides a complete overview of the essential elements of fiction, along with a diverse selection of stories to illustrate them. This reliable, well-written classic has introduced thousands of students to the serious study of fiction, yet it remains vital and compelling for today's readers, presenting the most important and engaging stories available in a single collection. The section on three featured writers, James Joyce, Flannery O'Connor, and Joyce Carol Oates, includes three stories by each author, as well as essays by noted critics on their works.

| Customer Reviews: Buy an older edition October 28, 2009 Mark K. Jensen (Tacoma, WA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Perrine anthology is a superb book that has become a sort of classic, but unless you have to buy the new edition for a course, I'd recommend that you buy any of the earlier editions instead. You'll save quite a bit of money and you'll get exactly the same excellent introduction to the art of fiction -- as well as a lot of the same short stories. I know this is so because I've collected a number of editions over the years, and there is very little if any difference in the commentary from edition to edition. There is some variation in the choice of stories, of course -- but not that much.
Great Book, well structured September 13, 2009 Kara M. Butterfield This is a great book. The chapters are interesting and focused on topics that are immediately applicable for new writers. Lots of literary examples are included, along with analysis questions designed to help the reader learn from them. I would definitely recommend it.
